The Sultanate’s
efforts to protect cetaceans

Enact laws and legislations to protect them and pose penalties on anyone who causes
harm, such as the “Law on Nature Reserves and Wildlife Conservation” (6/2003) by
Environment Authority
Protect their habitats and following up the implementation of impact limiting policies of
development projects by Environment Authority
A national work group was formed to study the causes of mammals and sea turtle
stranding by Ministerial Decision No. (110/2009), and it was amended by adding
relevant agencies by Ministerial Decision No. (274/2014)
Initiating the implementation of the study of the causes of mammals and sea turtle
stranding project since 2009 aims at:
Managing the response to mammals and sea turtle death and stranding reports
Managing and monitoring deaths of mammals and sea turtles, identifying stranding
areas,
Determining the extent of danger for each area and emphasizing the need to find out
the causes of death immediately when a case is reported
Establishing necessary measures to protect mammals and sea turtles, and their
habitats
Fill in the special database of marine mammals and sea turtles stranding
Raising awareness among community (school students, fishermen, Omani Women's
Associations, and relevant government agencies) about the importance of mammals
and sea turtles and procedures to be followed in case stranding or death observed
through awareness talks or lectures in this field.
A project to study the Arabian Humpback Whales life was conducted by the Environment
Society of Oman, in cooperation with Five Oceans Environmental Services
